BRIGHAM CITY, Utah — A new city ordinance banning all cryptocurrency ATMs within Brigham City limits officially took effect Tuesday, with local law enforcement confirming immediate compliance from area businesses.
The Brigham City Council passed the Virtual Currency City Ordinance on May 7, 2026, making it unlawful for any person or entity to host, operate, locate, or permit a virtual currency kiosk inside corporate city limits.
Prior to the enforcement deadline, police detectives identified two active kiosks within the city and met with the host businesses to inform them they had until July 7, 2026, to remove the machines. Authorities conducted follow-up visits on Tuesday and confirmed both locations had successfully complied and removed the kiosks.
According to AARP, cryptocurrency kiosks were used in scams that led to more than $389 million in reported losses in 2025. Adults 60 and older accounted for 76 percent of reported losses in cases where the victim’s age was known. States are moving to regulate or ban the machines, adding limits, warnings and licensing requirements.
The Brigham City police department circulated an official notice graphic emphasizing the new regulation as an effort geared toward protecting the community and preventing fraud.
With the ordinance now active, citizens and business owners are advised that anyone who continues to house a prohibited kiosk can be charged with a class B misdemeanor for every day the machine remains in place.
