LOGAN — A 27-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon, when he was struck and run over by an SUV.

Logan City Police Captain Tyson Budge said the cyclist was riding west on 1400 North. Near 400 West, he was hit from behind by a Ford Escape, driven by a man in his 50s.

The cyclist was struck by the front of the vehicle and then run over by the front driver’s side wheel. He suffered an injury to his head and a collapsed lung. He was transported to Logan Regional Hospital by ambulance and later flown out of the valley by a medical helicopter.

Budge said witnesses originally claimed the accident was a result of road rage after the cyclist was cut off by the SUV driver earlier. The driver claimed though he didn’t see the cyclist, and investigators believe he may have suffered from a medical episode or physical impairment.

Budge said the driver has had a recent history of driving incidents and officers are referring him to the Division of Motor Vehicles to have his license reevaluated.

No citations were issued but an investigation is ongoing.
