LOGAN, Utah – Utah State soccer opened its homestand in the winning column Friday, as the Aggies defeated Gonzaga, 2-1, in overtime play at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field.
Senior midfielder Jayne Robison-Merrill put the Aggies on the board with a last-second goal in the first half, while junior forward Wesley Hamblin scored the game-winner early in overtime. Senior forward Jessica Brooksby assisted on both goals.
With Friday’s win, the Aggies improve to 3-3-0 on the year, while Gonzaga falls to 3-2-1. This was Utah State’s first overtime match of the season. The Aggies and Bulldogs also played through extra time last season, ending the match in a 1-1 draw in Spokane.
Overall, Gonzaga out-shot the Aggies, 22-9. The Bulldogs fired nine shots on goal, while Utah State had seven on the day. With her eight saves, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Grace McGuire ties her career-high, set in the team’s 1-0 win at Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 2.
The first half offense was heavily focused in the Gonzaga attacking third Friday, as the Bulldogs took nine shots in the first half to the Aggies’ three. The Utah State defense remained staunch through the first 45 minutes though, keeping Gonzaga off the board through several opportune chances.
In the later minutes of the first half, Utah State found the ball on its attacking end of the field more. With just a few seconds remaining before the break, senior midfielder Katie Flynn took an Aggie throw-in. The ball went to Brooksby and a group of Gonzaga defenders, but Brooksby was able to flick it to Robison-Merrill who pushed it across the line as time expired.
Much as the first goal of the day was scored at the last second, the second goal happened early on in the second half. Nearly two minutes into the second half, Gonzaga took a shot that was deflected by the Aggie defense. In the meantime, Karley Baggerley, the Bulldogs’ leading scorer on the year, rebounded the shot for one of her own, getting it past the hands of McGuire to even the score.
Through the remaining minutes of regulation, both teams had several close opportunities to put up the go-ahead goal, but both backlines and goalkeepers remained in control to force extra playing time. The overtime period didn’t last long though, as Hamblin picked up the perfect pass from Brooksby and dribbled up the field to score the golden goal right at the 92 minute mark.
The Aggies remain home for the next four matches. Utah State will host Sam Houston State on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
